Which HyFlex participation mode appeals to you most as a learner, and which do you think would appeal to your students? Post a short reflection covering both, then read your colleagues’ posts and reply to at least one.

How to reply so that it is useful

Read at least one other post before you write your own, and answer it in three short parts:

    1. What works: name one specific choice in the post that would help their students, and say why.
    2. What worries you: point to one place where a learner in a different mode, especially the asynchronous one, could be left out, and suggest a fix.
    3. What you would borrow: one idea you will take into your own course, and how you would adapt it.

Post your own contribution as text in the message field rather than as an attachment, so that colleagues can read it without downloading. This is a practice task and it is not graded; the programme team reads every thread and replies where a discussion stalls.

Online asynchronous learning appeals to me the most. Participants may learn at their own pace but may feel ‘left out’ of classroom and traditional student class participation.

For me, I prefer to do a combination of learning in person and learning asynchronously according to my schedule, that is what worked best for me when I was in grad school and earning my Doctorate. My students, being aviation students, prefer in-person with limited online learning. Online learning works for when I cannot be in class for them, but they would much rather be in class.

I definitely get the appeal of online, asynchronous learning and for me personally, when I am learning something that I choose to learn about (something completely self-directed and voluntary), I do prefer online learning on my own time. I take free courses at Hillsdale College and my being able to learn on my own time allows me to learn in small chunks of do a deep dive into the content if my schedule allows.
