HyComm LAB
Accessibility statement
What we have built into this platform so that everyone can use it, where we know it still falls short, and how to tell us when it does.
The HyComm consortium is committed to making HyComm LAB usable by everyone, including people who navigate by keyboard, use a screen reader, need larger text, or cannot rely on sound or colour.
This statement applies to the training platform at hycomm.eu, including the course pages, module pages and all lesson content. The platform is developed and maintained by EFTA within the HyComm project, coordinated by the University of Bergen.
We aim to meet EN 301 549, the European accessibility standard for ICT products and services, which incorporates the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. This is the standard referenced by Directive (EU) 2016/2102 on the accessibility of public sector websites.
Current status: partially compliant. Most of the platform meets Level AA. The exceptions are listed further down, with what we are doing about each of them.
Reading and seeing
- Text size can be changed in four steps from any lesson page. Your choice is remembered between sessions.
- A high contrast mode is available on the same toolbar.
- Text and background colours meet the 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio required at Level AA. Large text and interface components meet 3 to 1.
- The layout reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 320 pixels wide, and text can be enlarged to 200 percent without loss of content.
- Colour is never the only way information is conveyed. Where a colour marks a participation mode, it is always accompanied by a label.
- Every image carries alternative text describing what it shows, not just what it is called.
Hearing
- Every video has synchronised captions.
- Every video also has a written transcript on the same page, directly beneath it.
- Every audio briefing has a transcript you can download as a PDF.
- Nothing plays automatically.
Moving and clicking
- Everything can be operated from the keyboard. Tab moves forward, Shift and Tab move back, Enter and Space activate, Escape closes.
- The element you are focused on is always visibly outlined.
- There are no keyboard traps: you can always tab out of any component.
- Nothing depends on a drag, a hover, or a precise gesture.
- There are no time limits anywhere, including in the quizzes.
Understanding
- Headings follow a logical order, so a screen reader can be used to navigate a lesson.
- Page language is declared, so screen readers pronounce the content correctly.
- Form fields have labels that stay visible while you type.
- Error messages explain what went wrong and what to do about it.
- Recurring elements appear in the same place in every lesson.
Motion
- If your device is set to reduce motion, all animation and smooth scrolling is switched off automatically.
- No content flashes more than three times a second.
We would rather list these than pretend they are not there.
01Audio description for videos
Criterion: WCAG 1.2.5 Audio Description, Level AA.
What is missing: our videos present information on slides that is spoken about but not always read out word for word. A person who cannot see the slides may miss some detail.
What we do instead: the full transcript below each video reproduces the narration, and the same content appears as text in the lesson itself, so nothing is available only in the video.
Plan: narration for new videos is being written so that it describes what is on screen rather than referring to it.
02Downloadable documents
Criterion: EN 301 549 clause 10, non-web documents.
What is missing: some Word and PDF files produced by partner institutions were not authored with tagged headings or reading order.
What we do instead: everything essential to completing a lesson is on the page itself. Downloads are supplementary.
Plan: documents are being retagged as each module is reviewed. If a specific file blocks you, tell us and we will produce an accessible version within five working days.
03Third-party components
What is affected: the quiz engine and the discussion forum are provided by third-party software. We have restyled them to meet contrast requirements and verified keyboard operation, but we do not control their underlying markup.
Plan: issues found are reported upstream. Where a fix is not forthcoming we will replace the component.
04Content contributed by other users
What is affected: posts written by other participants in the discussion forum. We cannot guarantee that a colleague has added alternative text to an image they uploaded.
What we do: guidance on writing accessible posts is shown when you compose one.
If you meet a barrier on this platform, we want to know. You do not need to describe it in technical terms. Telling us which page you were on and what you were trying to do is enough.

We aim to reply within five working days. If a fix will take longer than that, we will tell you when to expect it and offer the content in another format in the meantime.
If you are not satisfied with our reply
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate the matter. The HyComm consortium is coordinated by the University of Bergen, Norway, and the platform is developed and maintained by EFTA as the partner responsible for work package 3.

- Method
- Self-assessment: manual keyboard and screen reader testing, automated contrast measurement of every colour pair in the design system, and review of media alternatives
